When it comes to building muscle, losing weight/burning fat, or even taking a multivitamin or fish oils to live a happier, healthier life, supplements are a big part of wellness and achieving optimal health in modern society. However, what most people don’t realize is that sufficient hydration may be the key to reaching your fitness goals more so than you’d think. Not only can drinking an ample amount of water aid in your fitness related goals, adequate hydration will make you feel much better than if you are an consumer of beverages consisting of an extreme amount of sugar or alcohol.
Following an intense training session, whether it be for strength, aerobics, or a sport, most people will either absorb a post-workout shake of their liking or a healthy meal loaded will carbs, proteins, and healthy fats. Once this food or shake has been consumed, your body begins working to send the necessary nutrients to your muscles for repair. Whenever you are dehydrated or simply not drinking enough water or eating water-dense foods such as fruits, it takes your body a longer time to transmit various amino acids to your muscles. By hydrating frequently and having a substantial amount of water in your system, your body is able to circulate the proper minerals to the muscles which are undergoing recovery following a workout.
Do you ever feel cranky or have excessive headaches? If so, try drinking more water! The higher your H2O levels are, the more likely you are to think clearly and in a happier manner. Research shows that when dehydrated, your brain goes into a stage in which your thoughts do not process as well and the person is left in a confused manner with a somewhat “bad” attitude. Headaches are a sure sign of dehydration in some cases, so try drinking a glass of water instead of taking some kind of medication next time! If you thought that “using the bathroom” was the only way that your body flushed out harmful toxins and waste, you’re wrong. Actually, sweating, which can be increased more so by simply drinking more water, removes much of the detrimental bacteria within you.
If you are an athlete of any sort, then you will greatly benefit from consuming more water. The human body’s muscle tissue is composed of about 75% water. Therefore, when you are lacking a plentiful amount of H2O in your system, it’s no wonder that the body feels fatigued and dizzy. Do you ever suffer from joint pain in your knees, shoulders, etc.? Water keeps your cartilage soft and hydrated, which aids in prevention of injury and pain in general.
There are a bountiful number of reasons to stay hydrated each and every day. Although you may prefer your soft drinks, beer, or sweet tea, transitioning to drinking mostly water throughout your day is undoubtedly one of the healthiest decisions you can make. What most people do not realize is that the supplemental properties of plain H2O are exponential; it can help to build muscle or burn fat, prevent various diseases and pains/injuries, improve overall wellness and mood, and allow you to live longer, which would be reason enough to absorb an ample amount daily for someone such as myself. Hydration should be something that is applied to everyone, not just those who engage in physical activity or are health freaks. Water is extremely vital to proper bodily function, and can aid in muscle growth and weight loss much like sports nutrition supplements.
